Venice, Italy-based sustainable headwear company Atlantis Headwear announces a partnership with The Enginoars, a rowing team comprised of four engineers taking on the Atlantic Challenge. The collaboration came from an effort to raise awareness around sustainability and global responsibility — passions of both parties.

In early 2022, the rowing team reached out to Atlantis Headwear, lining up its preparations for its 3,000-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean. The journey requires rowers to take on nearly 40 days of constant rowing, as well as eat and sleep on the boat.

The Enginoars’ primary goal in embarking on the challenge was to support and raise funds for Engineers Without Borders, a nonprofit organization promoting sustainable engineering projects and education. Aligning with the cause, Atlantis Headwear wanted to spread the sustainability word and encourage others to take action toward a greener future.

Headwear for a Cause

To ensure they could comfortably make it across the Atlantic, the team needed the proper headwear. Atlantis Headwear and the rowing team collaborated to design two caps for the occasion. They came up with SAND, a cap featuring performance fabric, Repreve recycled fiber, and a stretchable sweatband. This cap was perfect for protecting the rowers during long, sunny days. For windier and chiller days, the Enginoars opted for HOLLY, an 8.5″ beanie made of Polylana fiber (composed of recycled polyester, acrylic, and other fibers).

“Not only did this [partnership] contribute to our ability to grow our brand, but it also enabled our supporters to become part of the team and join our charitable cause,” Rufus Mitchell-Heggs, Enginoars teammate, says.

“At Atlantis Headwear, we believe that sustainable fashion can be a catalyst for positive change and this partnership with the Enginoars allows us to spread that message to a wider audience. We hope that through our collaboration, we can inspire individuals to take action and embrace sustainability in their own lives.”

The Enginoars embarked on their trip on Dec. 12, 2022. After 36 days, 8 hours, and 57 minutes, the team reached their final destination of Antigua’s English Harbor. The Enginoars rowing team consisted of Rufus Mitchell-Heggs (U.K.), Simen Sandtorv Hansen (Norway), Thor-Martin Sandtorv (Norway), and Sindre Toft Nordal (Norway).

A Commitment to Sustainability

Atlantis Headwear’s partnership with The Enginoars isn’t unfamiliar territory. The company has numerous initiatives that align with its values around sustainability, including one of its passion projects Bosco Dei Racconti.

Atlantis Headwear owns a private forest near its headquarters, saving it from inevitable construction. It features 600 trees and plants, absorbing 182 tons of CO₂ since its establishment. In collaboration with Divisione Energia Srl, the pair conducted a survey of the area, georeferenced the trees, prepared a report of the CO₂ absorbed by each plant, developed a digital thematic map, and created informative panels to be placed throughout the forest.

This project is one of many Atlantis has its hands in. Keep a lookout for an announcement later this month about the company’s efforts to save the bees.
