On July 1, 2025, Netflix released, “Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel,” which features interviews with former staff of the apparel company.

Of particular focus in the documentary is the founder, Dov Charney, who went on to start Los Angeles Apparel and was recently tapped for Kanye West’s Yeezy brand. American Apparel was founded in 1989 but reached its height in the early 2000’s, which is the timeline the documentary focuses on. Despite its huge success built on edgy advertising and appeal to the Y2K generation of buyers, the company went through some tough times that were headlined by allegations against Charney, who was ultimately ousted in 2014. Charney has not been found guilty of, or liable for, any crimes that were discussed in the documentary.

In addition to interviews with former staff, the documentary also features voiceovers of women who claim they were abused. The voiceovers were done by actors. Netflix shared that “during legal proceedings some of the women’s allegations entered the public domain. Now for the first time we are bringing their accounts together, voiced by actors.”

Gildan Activewear acquired the American Apparel brand in 2017 after American Apparel filed for bankruptcy. At the time of writing, the documentary is currently available to view on Netflix.
