SanMar Secures Reaccreditation for Social Compliance Program
As companies continue to keep ethical production and labor practices a priority, those in the apparel manufacturing industry are no different. The latest in ethical labor news is the reaccreditation of SanMar Corporation‘s social compliance program by the Fair Labor Association (FLA). The decision demonstrates the wholesale apparel and accessory supplier’s continued commitment to promoting better labor conditions within its supply chain.
The decision follows a rigorous multi-year review of the company’s means to ensure its entire sourcing network — 111 facilities in 21 countries — is in compliance with international labor standards, according to a press release.
Highlights from SanMar’s Reaccreditation
- Strengthened supplier relationships. Through participation in Better Buying, suppliers can provide anonymous feedback about the company’s purchasing practices. In 2021, SanMar became the first company to publicly publish its Better Buying report and score. According to the press release, SanMar is the first and only company to date to publicly publish its Better Buying report and score.
- Data management. SanMar utilizes a customized data management platform to identify non-compliance trends and recurring findings that require further action.
- Supplier training. The company offers training for suppliers and employees to exercise their rights in the workplace.
“SanMar is honored to build on our decade-long legacy of accreditation with FLA,” Jeremy Lott, SanMar CEO, stated in a press release. “Our people are our top priority and the work we do with supplier relationships, data management, and workplace training are critical steps toward setting a high standard for labor rights in the apparel industry.”
“Since SanMar first joined FLA in 2007, the company and its leadership have demonstrated an enduring commitment to achieving better working conditions throughout its supply chain,” said FLA President and CEO Sharon Waxman in the press release from SanMar. “Through sustained engagement with suppliers and workers, SanMar has consistently embodied the 10 Fair Labor principles, and we commend them for the continual progress they have made since their first accreditation in 2012.”
Also part of SanMar’s corporate responsibility initiatives are things like providing sustainable apparel options and committing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Each of these are part of the company’s Canvas for Good mission, which focuses on people, planet, and product.
Fair Labor Accreditation is the only program of its kind — based on international standards and frameworks like the International Labour Organization, UN Guiding Principles, the OECD, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
