Nike and Fanatics Ink Global Merchandise Deal with Japanese Baseball Team
Earlier this year, Nike and Fanatics struck a deal to manufacture college sports fan apparel, set to begin in 2024. Now the duo is taking their partnership global in a new deal to manufacture and distribute merchandise for the Yomiuri Giants, Japan’s most successful and popular baseball team.
The Yomiuri Giants are the first sports team outside of the U.S. to adopt the Nike-Fanatics model for on-field and sports merchandise, according to a report shared by CNBC. Here’s how the agreement breaks down:
- Nike will become the official uniform supplier of the Yomiuri Giants
- Fanatics will operate e-commerce and physical retail businesses for the team and plans to refurbish retail stores at the Tokyo Dome ahead of the 2023 season
- Fanatics will make on-field uniforms and player performance items, as well as other Nike-branded fan jerseys and apparel, which will be sold online and in physical stores
- Fanatics will also create autograph and collectible products for fans of the Yomiuri Giants
The deal “will benefit Yomiuri Giants fans with a larger selection of high-quality merchandise,” Masanori Kawana, managing director of Fanatics in East Asia, said in a press statement.
Becoming a Global Merchandise Giant
Over the past several years, Fanatics has become a force to be reckoned with in the sports merchandising world. It evolved to include collectibles, sports betting, and NFT businesses by completing several acquisitions and important partnerships.
The company has exclusive licensing deals with the NFL, NHL, and MLB, along with various colleges and universities. Several of those, including the NFL and MLB, overlap with Nike jersey and apparel deals. Earlier this year, CNBC also reported that Fanatics is in talks to buy sports betting company Tipico, though a deal hasn’t yet been reached yet.
Fanatics has grown to more than 10,000 employees in 57 countries, serving nearly 100 million sports fans worldwide.
According to several sources, this agreement with the Yomiuri Giants will only deepen its ties to Nike’s $162 billion sporting empire. In addition, it will also further its international reach. This deal expands the company’s overseas portfolio, which currently includes English soccer clubs Chelsea and Manchester United as well as French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain.
The arrangement lets Nike reap many benefits of being the Giants’ jersey partner, while removing the manufacturing and distribution costs from its P&L, as shared by Yahoo! Sports. The company can focus primarily on the marketing and on-field aspects of this deal, while retailers will soon be able to source Giants apparel from the same place they get Nike’s MLB product.
Fanatics will unveil the new online offering for the Yomiuri Giants fans at the end of January. Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed, nor was its duration.
