Colorado Avalanche center Nazem Kadri is taking what seemed like a mundane interview comment and using it for good.

After the hockey star scored the game-winning overtime goal in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals against defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning, Lightning head coach Jon Cooper commented that he felt there were too many men on the ice during the play. Now that complaint has become not only a catchy T-shirt design, but it’s also being used to raise funds for the Nazem Kadri Foundation.

Kadri wore a T-shirt during the celebration parade that took place in Denver, and it quickly caught the eyes of many fans. Adrienne Ruth, a lifelong Avs fan, is the one behind the design. In it, you can see six helmets and six sticks, a nod to the too many men accusation. Kadri connected with Ruth, who runs the Murder On Ice Design Co. on Etsy, and from there, the two teamed up with the website Everything Hockey to sell the shirts.

And while hockey fans everywhere can appreciate the humor, the real story is the good it’s creating. Fifty percent of the sales go to the Nazem Kadri Foundation, which works to raise mental health awareness. At the time of publishing, more than $60K has been raised.

“To know that a T-shirt can provide some money to hopefully help people on the way [to better mental health] is something you can’t replace,” Ruth said in a report shared by CBS Colorado.
