Lakeville, Minnesota apparel creator Jessie Mommsen, owner of Threads & Inks, has been awarded the Q1 $10,000 scholarship from STAHLS’ to help makeover and advance her business as part of its Small Business Scholarship program.

The Stahl Family Small Business Fund was created to support entrepreneurs in the growing garment customization industry. In 2021, the company awarded 21 scholarships to aspiring entrepreneurs with new equipment and supplies they needed to get their apparel business started. Every quarter in 2022, it is awarding a shop makeover worth $10,000 to a Stahl Family Small Business Scholarship winner. That includes new heat printing materials, onsite training of their new equipment, and quarterly onsite coaching sessions from a STAHLS’ team of experts.

Threads & Inks is a small custom-decorated clothing company that provides printing experiences for schools, sports teams, and other local businesses and organizations. With her winnings, Mommsen is looking to grow the shop by adding new tools, including a vinyl cutter and hat press, and eventually hiring new employees to the team to increase efficiencies.

“Having access to industry experts who have been in the same position we’re currently in is truly invaluable,” said Mommsen in a press release. “I could not be more grateful to STAHLS’ and their dedication to entrepreneurs like myself and I cannot wait to start working with and learning from their team.”

STAHLS’ was founded in a Detroit garage 90 years ago. “Since my great-grandparents stared STAHLS’ in their garage 90 years ago, we’ve gone on to work with national brands like the NFL and Nike,” said Dan Stahl, president of the Stahl Family Small Business Scholarship, in a statement. “Our goal is to help entrepreneurs whose beginnings look similar to ours, follow a similar trajectory, and take their business to the next level.”

Fellow entrepreneurs inspired by Threads & Inks’ story still have three more opportunities to apply for their chance at a $10,000 makeover this year. To apply, businesses must meet the following criteria:

  • Have an existing dedicated workspace outside of a residence
  • Be an established apparel decoration business operating for at least three years
  • Operate as a full-time business (not part time/side hustle)

Small business owners in need of a shop makeover, whether a current STAHLS’ customer or not, are encouraged to apply for a scholarship today. The second quarter winner is expected to be selected this month.
