Kathy Cheng, Redwood Classics Apparel founder and president, has been named as the 2022 Woman of Distinction by Ascend Canada at its annual Leadership Awards gala on May 19, 2022. While the Leadership Awards have been going for several years, this is the first year for the Woman of Distinction category.

Ascend Canada, an organization that works to enhance the presence, visibility, and influence of current and future Pan-Asian business leaders, presents its annual Leadership Awards to individuals who exemplify personal and professional dedication and who have contributed value to the community. The program is done via a nomination package submitted to the company.

According to the company, the Woman of Distinction Award celebrates a woman:

  • Who has dedicated her efforts to empower other Pan-Asian women and advance their careers
  • Who has been a trailblazer and shown a measurable impact for gender equality through their significant contributions to the organization and community
  • Who has demonstrated exemplary leadership by modeling inclusive behaviors, achieving excellence professionally, and impacting and influencing other leaders to embrace inclusivity
  • Who is an advocate of women and is passionate toward unlocking their potential … a role model who has inspired many women

According to a press release from Redwood Classics Apparel, Cheng was chosen because she’s a “visionary entrepreneur and a champion for women in business. Her #WomanOfTheWeek social media campaign spotlights and lifts up a new woman every Wednesday. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Council and is an Ambassador for Canada’s LGBT+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC).”

“I am humbled and honored by this recognition from Ascend Canada, particularly as this award is presented during Asian Heritage Month,” says Cheng. “Receiving this acknowledgment from my peers deepens my commitment to support and mentor others and use my seat at the table to give them a platform to raise their own voices.”

Other categories that are part of Ascend Canada’s Leadership Awards include Mentor of the Year, Student of the Year, Social Impact Award, and Inclusion Champion of the Year.
