Gildan announced that in February, it will officially close its yarn facility in Cedartown, Georgia. In a letter sent to employees, the company stated that the layoff will affect all 107 employees of the facility with an expected layoff date of Feb. 4, according to a report shared by The Polk County Standard Journal.

The yarn facility was originally purchased in 2003 by a joint-venture company with Frontier Spinning Mills Inc. In addition, it was part of a $28 million dollar expansion and refurbishing project by Gildan in 2013.

Gildan also said in the letter that the company has notified the Georgia Department of Labor to assist with the closure and layoff. Employees may apply for open positions at other locations. In the article shared by the Journal, the Development Authority of Polk County announced that it will organize a job fair at the plant for Gildan’s employees on Dec. 16 from 7 to 10 a.m.

“It is detrimental to hear of the closing, as it is for the employees,” said Chris Thomas, president of the Development Authority of Polk County, in a statement. “Gildan is one of our top 100-plus employers in the county and they have always been great corporate partners with our community and our school system.

The job fair will provide access to training services, technical college information, and industry interviews for the employees. Employers interested in participating can call 770-684-5686 or email sarah@choosepolk.com.
