Ouray Sportswear has informed the state of Colorado that it will close its Englewood, Colorado plant. The move will result in 154 workers losing their jobs.

Over the course of the past few years, the company has gone through several mergers and acquisitions. In 2021, Ouray acquired Locale, a manufacturer of outdoor headwear and accessories. Shortly after, the two brands were acquired by S&S Activewear, and in January 2023, L2 Brands acquired the brands from S&S.

“Changing business needs require us to close this facility permanently and, therefore, we are providing you with this notice in accordance with the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act,” President Connor Knutson wrote in a letter filed with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, which was shared by The Denver Post. The letter was dated Aug. 18.

It went on to say that 154 employees had been told of their permanent dismissal starting on Oct. 17 and extending through the end of the year. According to The Denver Post article, that will exclude a few positions that might continue into the first quarter of 2024.

Ouray Sportswear maintained a 114,000-sq.-ft. facility in Englewood that housed 13 automatic screen print presses and 176 embroidery heads, according to the company’s website.

Ouray Sportswear has its roots in winter gear, originally opening in 1965 when Bill Musselman started Ski Country Imports. The company initially brought over European winter gear before manufacturing items domestically. The family added the Ouray Sportswear line in 1997. The company has since expanded to serve more than 4,000 customers in a variety of markets, including destination, collegiate, golf, and corporate.

Knutson didn’t respond to an interview request from The Denver Post to provide more details on why L2 Brands is closing the apparel plant and whether that production work would move elsewhere. L2 also has manufacturing plants in Pennsylvania and El Salvador.
