Unfortunately for millennials, apparel styles from the late ‘90s and early 2000’s are now considered “retro” and “nostalgic.” But when brands take it way back to the ‘80s, well that’s just plain old-fashioned. But for some companies, like Union LA, it works to their advantage.

In 2018, the fashion apparel brand teamed up with Jordan Brand (yes, the Air Jordan Brand) to collaborate on two Air Jordan 1 Retro High sneaker collections. Now, the pair are coming together again, this time bringing an apparel element to the mix.

The Air Jordan 1 KO Low capsule might showcase sneakers, but the matching apparel items inspired by ‘80s Black and Latino styles highlight culture in a classic, yet energetic, way. According to a press release from Hype Beast, “Simple and timeless silhouettes are included in the assemblage that are inspired from fashion sensibilities found in old-school rap magazines.”

Included in the streetwear-style collection of apparel items are a navy tracksuit, knitted teal crewneck sweatshirt, powder-blue pullover hoodie, long-sleeve T, short-sleeve T, and black sweatpants. A few of the items, including the tracksuit and crewneck, feature the iconic Jordan logo as well as the Union logo. Rounding out the collection is a white bucket hat.

“The theme for the apparel this season was a nod to the classic sportswear vibes as influenced by the Black and Latino cultures during the mid to late ‘80s,” reads an Instagram post from Union LA. “This is our call to action for y’all to style yourself and take back dressing as a form of expression as opposed to a ‘drip flex’ competition.”

The shoes and apparel are scheduled to launch via Union LA Feb. 2.

While apparel decorators might not be working with heavy-hitters such as the Jordan Brand, paying attention to retail trends will only serve to benefit business.
