For reasons only known to superfans, some brands have managed to create cult-like followings. Tim Horton’s, ‘Stranger Things,’ and even Mountain Dew have all managed to take the undying affection fans often feel and turn it into marketing mayhem. But the Portland Trailblazers might take the cake with the team’s recent uniform drop that’s all about … airport carpet.

The team recently released its 2022-23 Nike NBA City Edition uniform. Instead of making a play on some iconic sports metaphor, the uniform pays homage to the original Portland International Airport carpet pattern. It’s a pattern that apparently has its own following.

While most travelers likely never look down and notice how “cool” airport carpet is, the original design in the Portland airport managed to captured some attention. According to a report shared by KATU 2, the carpet developed a passionate fan following due to its distinct colors and design. Flyers have even been known to take pictures of it as visual proof of where they were.

With a carpet pattern that gets so much attention, it makes sense the city’s NBA team used it to score a slam-dunk marketing move. The uniform incorporates a black base and the Blazers sash across the chest but with a twist. This iteration features the teal and geometric-shape pattern that made the carpet a viral sensation.

In a press release, the Blazers stated, “The City Edition uniform showcases the confidence and quirkiness that defines Portland, as no other team or city would embrace an airport carpet pattern to the degree that Portlanders have.”

For those interested in seeing the iconic carpet for themselves, they’ll have to satisfy their curiosity with the uniforms for now. The original carpet was removed in 2019 during renovations (though it is set to make a return in 2024).

Fans of the carpet, the team, or both can buy the City Edition uniform at ripcityclothing.com, at Rip City Clothing in Moda Center, or at the new Rip City Clothing pop-up store in Concourse C of the Portland International Airport.
